THINGS TO DO

By staying at Hilltop Hideaway Lodge you get the best of three counties! The lodge itself is situated in Lancashire and is also on the the edge of Cumbria and North Yorkshire, making it is the perfect place to explore the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales National Park. There are so many things and activities to do in the area it is impossible to list them all but, here are some that we recommend:

Lakeside & Haverthwaite railway

Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway

An amazing day out for children and adults alike!

Travel back in time when you climb aboard one of their trains. A distant memory of bygone years for some and new experience for others, it’s a unique day out for all.

Enjoy beautiful views from your carriage up to Lakeside; the southern tip of Lake Windermere. Then if you fancy, continue your journey aboard a Windermere Steamer to Bowness or Ambleside…. or do the journey in reverse!

The station welcomes dogs and they can even ride the train for FREE!

Kirkby Lonsdale

Only 10 minutes drive away from the lodge, Kirkby Lonsdale is a beautiful historic market town nestled between the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales.

You will find lovely shops and restaurants there. Not to miss are Kirkby Lonsdale Brewery for those who enjoy a pint, and Chocolat, a family run, luxury chocolate shop providing a vast selection of delicious hand-made chocolates

Don't forget to walk to Ruskin's View, one of the most breathtaking views in England in our opinion!

Lake Windermere

The bottom of Lake Windermere is only 30 minutes away from the lodge. Head off to the Lakeside Pier and hop on a boat for a lovely cruise which will take you to Bowness-on-Windemere and all the way to Ambleside.

Also nearby, you will find the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway where from April to October you can enjoy a fun ride on a steam train.

If this is not enough, you can also visit the Lakeland motor museum or the Lakes Aquarium.

Lakeland Maze Farm Park

A really fun day out for all the family less than 30 min from the lodge.

Opened to the public from may to November (dates may vary) this working farm becomes a wonderful playground !

There are plenty of things to do at Lakeland Maze Farm: feeding and petting the farm animals, an amazing outdoor play area with bouncy castles, an indoor soft play, a café, a ride on the farmer's tractor to name a few.

But more importantly you can try to master their maize maze! There is a small one for younger children or the main one which can take up to 2.5 hours to finish!

Golf Courses

For those who enjoy golf, you will find several well regarded golf courses near the lodge.

The most popular are Casterton Golf Club, a mere 14 minutes away, which offers a wonderful main course with spectacular views, as well as a par, driving range and Footgolf or Rugbygolf!

Kirkby Lonsdale Golf Club 17 minutes from the lodge offers a golf course set in more than 160 acres of parkland, a driving range, an interactive swing room and professional tuition.

Ingleton

The most popular attraction of Ingleton is Ingleton's waterfalls trail, a 4.5 mile trail with distinctive geological features, plant life and spectacular views of the waterfalls. An absolute must if visiting the area. Be aware that they are lots of stairs and this is not suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs. Also make sure to wear walking boots!

You can also visit not 1 but 2 caves near Ingleton: Whitescar Cave, the longest show cave in Britain and Ingleborough Cave which is accessible for wheelchairs users.

In the summer, why not go for a splash in Ingleton Heated Outdoor Swimming Pool

Food & Drinks

For those days where you do not want to cook, you will be spoiled for choice!

Only 5 minutes drive from the lodge, you will find The Bay Horse at Arkholme which offers fine dining in the evening Wednesday to Saturday, and Sunday lunch

We also highly recommend the Lunesdale arms, which specialises in a British take on Southern Mediterranean cuisine and offers a fine range of ales and wine.

And in Kirkby Lonsdale, the lovely Crossing Point Cafe offers yummy food and is also dog friendly!

Arnside & Silverdale AONB

Arnside and Silverdale is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in England, on the border between Lancashire and Cumbria, adjoining Morecambe Bay.

This extraordinary place is famous for its amazing wildlife, stunning scenery, and superb walks.

There is something for everyone in the area: ancient woodlands, orchards and meadows and beautiful coastal scenery.

Make sure to also visit the popular village of Arnside, the pretty village of Beetham and the historic village f Warton.

Morecambe Bay

Morecambe has some of the most beautiful coastline in Britain and a number of long distance walking and cycling routes start in the Bay area, including the Way of the Roses (long distance cycle route from Morecambe Bay to Bridlington Bay), and the Lancashire Coastal Way. If you are looking for something more gentle, then try cycling or walking on Morecambe Promenade.

The Bay is also one of the best places in the UK for high adrenalin outdoor activities from sailing, to powered paragliding, parachuting, windsurfing, mountain biking, horse-riding, and kitesurfing.

In the summer, don’t miss the annual Catch the Wind festival which is a kite and music festival all in one.
